CLEANING PEARLS

DO:

  • Take off pearls at the clasp rather than the pearl to prevent the pearls from loosening.
  • After washing pearls, lay them on a towel – when the towel is dry the pearls should be dry.
  • After wearing pearls wipe them with a dry or damp cloth to prevent dirt accumulating.
  • Keep pearls separate from other jewellery to prevent scratches – store in a soft cloth bag.

DON'T:

  • Do not clean pearls using an ultrasonic cleaner. Do not steam clean pearls.
  • Do not use detergents, bleaches, baking soda or ammonia based cleaners.
  • Do not wear pearls if string is wet – it can stretch. Do not hang pearls to dry.
  • Do not use toothbrushes, scouring pads or abrasive materials – they scratch the pearls.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

What are pearls?

Pearls are created when an irritant becomes lodged inside a mollusk. The irritant becomes the pearl centre as the mollusk coats the irritant with layers of nacre over several years.

Natural pearls:

Natural pearls are made by oysters in the ocean without interference by humans. They are rare and expensive due to over fishing and pollutions.

Cultured pearls:

Cultured pearls are real pearls but are created by human intervention. The irritant is placed inside the oyster or mussel to form the pearl.

Faux pearls:

Faux pearls are glass beads that have a pearled coating.

Slo-pearl uses cultured salt water pearls.
